Hospital Services Council Colombo Sri Lanka

The Hospital services council was incorporated as a government approved charitable organization in 1987 by the vipassi Buddhist center which is situated in the premises of the National Hospital of Si Lanka.

The highly respected Buddhist prelate who founded the renowned Buddhist Temple – the Vajiraramaya, Bambalapitiya, the Most Venerable Pelene Vajira gnana Maha Nayaka Thera had a set of illustrious students. In addition to religious work, the Maha Nayaka Thera also promoted them to indulge themselves in social service activities.

One of the students, Panwila Vipassi Thera selected the hospital service as his social project. He would walk from the temple to the General Hospital, meet patients, chat with them, console them, chant Pirith and walk back.

The Most Venerable Madihe Pannasiha Maha Nayaka Thera continued the tradition and encouraged Vipassi Thera’s mission after the passing away of Pelene Maha Nayaka Thera.

With time Vipassi Thera decided to take residence in the hospital and be of service to the patients. To anyone confined to a hospital bed, listening to Pirith, getting Pirith thread tied round the hand and talking to a monk meant so much.

Seeing the monk’s devotion, a benefactor donated a two story building which to this date is the residential quarters of the Hospital Services Monks. Single handed, Vipassi Thera did a yeoman service until his passing away.

The religious and welfare services organized by Vipassi Thera gained recognition of the hospital administration and which took a more organized form in setting up of the Hospital Services Council. In 1987 the Council was incorporated as a government approved charitable organization

The Council functions under the Supervision of the
Sri Vajiragnana Dharmayathanaya – the renowned Buddhist Institution founded by the Most Venerable Madihe Pannasiha Mahanayaka Thera of Maharagama.
